Modern language labs are known by many names, digital language lab, multimedia language lab, language media center and multimedia learning center to name but a few.

Digital language labs, in general, offer the following:

  • Text, images, audio and video can easily be integrated into the lesson and shared with a select or all students.
  • Teachers pre-lesson preparation can include multimedia aspects.
  • Students can record their own voice and playback the recordings, interact with other students and save their work.
  • Teachers can interact with students, discretely listen to their vocabulary as well as control all students computers via the teacher’s console.
The purpose of a digital language lab is to involve students to actively participate in language learning exercises and to provide an environment where students can have more practice than possibly in a traditional classroom environment.

Common components in a modern language lab:

  • The Teacher has a computer/laptop with our Digital Language Lab software installed and pre-configured.
  • Headsets are provided for the teacher and students to outside sounds and disturbances.
  • All computers used by the students will have appropriate hardware for listening to audio and recording speech.
  • All computers are situated in the same classroom and connected to the same local area network (LAN).
  • Access to the main server is required to store students work.

Why use a language lab in language teaching?

It has been recorded that in an average foreign language lesson, the combined time spent by students speaking is 10½ minutes, these results are based on a typical 45 minute lesson (DESI 2006, pg. 48-49).

Below is a table that shows an approximate speaking practice time each student will have in your traditional classroom. The table also shows the approximate time each student will have with in a Digital Language Lab classroom.

10 student class 30 student class
Traditional classroom ~1 minute ~21 seconds
Classroom with language lab ~11 minutes* ~11 minutes
