Last weekend saw one of the Greenlight team step out of the office to join 20 friends and take part in a 3 day event, the Cost to Coast bicycle ride.
What started as pub talk last September became reality on a very wet and windy morning in Workington last Friday. After months of preparation the boys thought they were ready, but any enthusiasm vanished when faced with the gales lashing the Workington coast. However middle aged testosterone soon kicked in, the competitive element took hold and the race to Newcastle had begun.
Over the next 3 days many miles were covered, some doing repeat miles due to bad map reading, large quantities of food and drink were consumed and lots of laughs had on the way. Tackling some of the hills, particularly Hartshead and the Old Coach Road, was a challenge for guys who live in the flatlands of Cheshire and being overtaken by ladies with shopping baskets on their bikes was a shock for some. The race to reach a pub in time to watch the Man Utd vs Chelsea FA Cup final would have given Lance Armstrong a run for his money.
The generosity of spirit shown by complete strangers was amazing, a group of Sunderland fans undertaking the ride loaned to one of our team a rear wheel to replace one which had been wrecked on a particularly fast and flowing downhill section.
The final day’s ride into Newcastle was fast and fun, following miles of disused rail tracks and cycle pathways and finishing up on the quayside where a pint, or two, and food was quaffed with great satisfaction and not a little smugness.
Every one of the group said what a wonderful experience it had been. Despite a few sores and some sleepless nights (too many snorers in this group) the stories of spills, personal achievements and lunacy soon took charge and suggestions began to be put forward of the next challenge. That will be the Manchester 100 in September and then possibly and End to End attempt. Who knows, but the cycling will continue.
