iPhone iOS 5 Power Issues

Apple have officially accepted that there is a battery life issue with their latest version of their mobile operating system. It affect all iPhones from the 3Gs right up the the new 4s.

They recently released a new update for iOS5, version 5.0.1 which was hoped would fix the power issues. Some users did report improvements, however most saw no difference and still reported issues. Now Apple are rumoured to be working on version 5.0.2 in another attempt to fox the issue. It was rumoured to be released this week however the rumor mill now claims this will not happen.

We suggest that anyone who uses their phone a lot and is running out of power before the end of the day turn of their location services and invest in a spare charger for the office or car.

Naughty Windows Phone

It was not long ago that Apple was in trouble for “tracking users locations”. It was claimed that iPhones logged and stored their locations and this information could be used to see where the user was, or had been. In reality the phone stored the locations of cell towers so it could connect quickly the next time, much like a browser caching images to save time. The issue was that this info was stored un-encrypted and could be accessed quite easily. Apple has since fixed the issue by encrypting the data and also reducing the amount of time it is stored for.

Now Microsoft are in trouble for the same thing. It is claimed that their Windows 7 Phons operating system collects  data from mobile phone users without their knowledge. Data, such as locations, is collected by various phone running the operating system when the phone’s camera is turned on, even if the users has set this data not to be recorded. It has been tested and verified on HTC and Samsung handsets running Microsofts latest mobile operating system.

Microsoft has remained silent on the lawsuit and are yet to say what they plan to do about it. We suspect they will stop the data being stored, but as they do not manufacture the phones which run their operating system it may take some time for the update, if there is one, to be available on all handsets.

We will be keeping a close eye on this as we believe users should not be tracked without their knowledge or consent.

Steve Jobs – 1955 to 2011

Steve Jobs

This morning we heard the tragic news that whilst we were all asleep in the UK, Steve Jobs passed away. Reports state that he was comfortable at home surrounded by his family.

Steve had been battling with pancreatic cancer since 2003. Unfortunately he could fight no longer.

Steve was a true visionary to us here at Greenlight Computers. He built and ran a company which changed the face of our industry. He touch so many people.

Steve, we will miss you and we will never forget you. Stay hungry, stay foolish.
